R You Ready?

Skrinkering Hearts had a fun post up the other day so I thought I’d play along.

Ten things I love brought to you by the letter R.

1) Romance

I’m not talking about overt materialistic gestures but rather the small ones that show you matter. The little notes. The thoughtful gestures. A mix tape (modern version: mix cd). I’m a total sucker for that stuff. The most romantic things that boyfriends have done for me include:

a) Driving up to the oceanside, leaving the headlights on, and asking me to dance to Frank Sinatra right there in the beam of light with the ocean keeping time.

b) Making me a wind chime because I mentioned how I wished I had one and then leaving it on my porch for me to find/hear on my birthday.

c) Writing a song about me and including it in a mix tape as a surprise (this was back in the day before cds).

d) Leaving notes on the stereo for when I came home that said “press play” and someone soulful like Otis Redding would start singing through the speakers.

e) Bringing me flowers to work on Fridays “just because.”

2) Raphael Saadiq

He is one smooth cat with funk and jive and groove. He reminds me of Smokey Robinson and Sam Cooke. I love classic soul music and am amazed how he’s brought that vibe back without it feeling dated.

3) Rain

Living in the Emerald City, I certainly get my fair share of rain. It’s the number one question I get when I tell people where I live. “How do you stand all the rain?” I just so happen to love it so it doesn’t bother me one bit. The perpetual grayness during the long winter is what kills my spirit.

4) Road Trips

I do not take enough of these and that must be remedied PRONTO. One of my favorite day trips was with my friend, Dumpling. We drove up the coast without an agenda and just explored. It was, sincerely, one of the best days I ever had.

5) Red

It’s my favorite color. Enough said.

6) Reading

As a kid, I would get called to dinner and would inevitably yell back, “Just want to finish this chapter!” I was a voracious rrosario-dawson-picture-61eader. I still love to read and have started two book clubs in the last 10 years- one that was incredibly successful and one that fizzled out. I should really make more time to read and not let things like chores and TV get in the way.

7) Rosario Dawson

A picture is worth a thousand words. ——>

8) Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups

My candy weakness. See Exhibit A.

9) Real Simple

This is my favorite magazine. For an uber-organizer like me, I lovelovelove all the tips and articles and most of the time the recipes are easy and delicious. Try this one. It’s SO GOOD.

10) Roller coasters

My favorite roller coaster is the Giant Dipper at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, mostly for nostalgic reasons but it really does deliver a great ride. It’s rickety (give it a break, it’s over 100 years old) and has a lot of dips and fast turns PLUS you get to see the ocean as you hold your arms up and scream your head off. It’s fantastic.

**If you want to participate, leave a comment on this post and I will assign you a letter. You then write about 10 things you love that begin with your assigned letter and post them on your blog. When people comment on your posted list, you give them a letter and the chain continues on and on.

  1. Ohhh, I love Otis Redding. Bliss. Something about his voice just makes me happy.
I dig RealSimple too. As one of my regular Christmas presents I get a subscription. Some of the recipes are soooo tasty…and some are even uber simple (which is great for a neophytpe cook like myself).

  2. I can’t even talk about all the things that I LOVE about your R List!!!
Raphael, Rosario Dawson, Reeses Pieces, omg…and Real Simple (the greatest mag!)! RED.RED.RED…you spoke to my heart!!

I want in….send me my letter puhlease??
    **THANKS**

  3. This list was awesome and not just because of Rosario Dawson and Reese Peanut Butter Cups.
I would love to play along, just no hard letters. Please 🙂

  4. This is a great list but I am stuck on the idea of a mix CD being modern. I don’t think it will be for long. Soon it’ll be playlists that we make for each other and somehow just send digitally. Or something.

  5. The Giant DIpper is one of the scariest coasters I’ve ever ridden. I’ve never felt like I wasn’t going to fly out of the car on every bump.

    Also, vampires.

  6. Fun!! This would translate well to Facebook too…you know, where all the cool memes hang out nowadays… 😉

  7. Oh sign me up… for this.

I love simple, thoughtful romantic gestures too… more than walking in and getting roses. Roses are so, well, over done.

  9. Oh, I *LOVE* the Giant Dipper! I love that it’s old and rickety, gives it more character. Oh, and I think it’s best when you keep your feet off the floor because you REALLY feel the dips and hills.

I was also a voracious reader growing up, and I wish I had the time…or could multitask knitting and reading…to read more books. But right now, I am obsessed with finishing a baby blanket before the baby is driving.

Those are some lovely bits of romance. As well they should be. Because you deserve treatment like that.

And I’m totally making that shrimp.

    Gimme a letter, please 🙂

  10. That’s a cute meme and I’ll participate (unless you run out of letters). Red’s my favorite color as well and I love wooden roller coasters.

  11. peanut butter cups are my very favorite. I keep some in the freezer at all times because they taste so yummy frozen. Unfortunately, my 5 year old found them and he is as addicted as I am.

I love reading these. It is so cool to see what people come up with!

  12. Well darling you would be the only one to comment to on my blog but I would LOVE to participate. If possible. :o)

I too heart the rain, it’s a big reason why I moved to Seattle. BIG reason. I’m originally from the desert so any change of season makes my nipples hard. ;o)

Seriously though, for the gray days of winter I combat them with fabulous knee high socks. Today I wore a delightful gray, black and white harlequin design. Brilliant! Yay me.

    And as usual, yay you!

    :o)

  13. Roller Coasters: I used to be a fan of Disney’s Space Mountain. My parents moved to the bay area after I graduated high school. I experienced the giant dipper for the first time at age 19 and I’ve been forever hooked. So, you called it Sizzle, Giant Dipper IS the best roller coaster.

  15. Love your list! Especially since Sweets and I just decided we’re going to take a road trip out west (likely to Montana) this summer instead of going to the beach! Oh and Reese’s are my favorite, too. And though I grew tired of Real Simple, one of my favorite (easy!) recipes for black bean soup was torn from their pages!

  17. Though I’m not a big fan of roller coasters and I am a fan of Rosario Dawson, reading, and road trips. This looks like so much fun! I’d love to participate! Could you send me a letter?
